The area between the historic centre of Brindisi and the sea, an environment of great potential, had been mainly used as parking and movement of traffic.
The redevelopment project changed the seafront into a place for walking and to enjoy the sea, the light and the history of Brindisi.
A spectacular row of palm trees define the seafront promenade from the historic garden of Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II to the new tree-lined square overlooking Palazzo Montenegro, where the wooden deck connects the square to the sea in the shade of selected specimens of Jacaranda mimosifolia.
Offering spaces for walking, pausing, and relaxing, the new waterfront conveys sensations of peace and harmony. During the design phase, particular attention was given to the relationship with the landscape and respect for the genius loci, from the materials used to the vegetation of the new planted areas.
The planting of Phonix dactylifera palms, characterized by the tall and slender stem, protects the perception of the building facing the sea and guarantees the from the sea and from the opposite bank.
Also some pavement stones found under the asphalt during the construction site were reused; white limestone and black volcanic stone.
The street furniture is integrated into the design of the spaces through the use of homogeneous materials: chairs in wooden slats are located in Montenegro square and monolithic seats in limestone, similar to that of the pavement, are placed on promenade by the sea.
During the site excavations works, archaeological remains were discovered and placed inside the ‘Casa del turista’ (House of the tourist) located along the promenade.
