The architectural project draws on the archetype of the classical dwelling drawn in a pure form, with an open front towards the town centre and an impluvium that acts as the building’s fulcrum.

Site plan

The school has a total area of 1244 square meters, and a footprint of 868 square meters.

On the ground floor there are 376 square meters of construction, while on the upper floor there are 868 square meters. Connective spaces, usually represented by corridors, are transformed into agoras fostering inclusiveness and conviviality. The courtyard references unity with all the accesses to the classrooms facing a collective space at the centre of the first floor, providing a space for conviviality and friendship. The classrooms provide for student growth, adapting to the changing needs over time, for this reason sliding panels ensure flexibility and fluidity.

The large glass surfaces facing the outside offer a view of the mountain environment, a valuable naturalistic background for didactics. The walls are sliding, equipped with lockers and contain technological spaces reserved for systems installations. The restaurant overlooks both the inner courtyard and the school garden. This is a semicircle that embraces the west wing of the structure and has the specific purpose of being a place of learning and education on proper nutrition. The presence of specific furniture is used to allow the reconfiguration of the class, also in relation to the methodological approaches adopted. Direct contact with the external space creates a large experimental laboratory that inspires the student, avoiding any feeling of occlusion and promoting outdoor education. Following the demolition of the current school, the site and the space in front of it will revert to being part of the park again. The area will be planted with local coppicing while the surface will be partly green and partly permeable paving. Water acts as a connecting element of the external space: there is a new fountain is located near this entrance, the historic fountain in the park and the pond in the school square.

The solar radiation within the facility is managed through external sunshades and roll-up blinds. Ambient heating is provided by floor heating panels, while air treatment is carried out via appropriately coloured visible installations. There is a photovoltaic and solar thermal system on the roof.

A storm water collection system and a wastewater treatment plant are also installed.
